Life is Getting Harder

Has anyone else noticed this life is getting harder to live? Everything just seems so much more difficult than it ever has been. Our family members seem to be harder to get along with. We and our long-term friends are having trouble. Our church friends aren’t as forgiving toward us as they could, or possibly should be. We are often strained at every turn to simply hold the ends together. My little job in the church is to be an encourager, so I want to encourage you today. I want to let you know that God knows that you are weary. God knows that you long for the days when life was easy. But God also wants you to know that He has made these days for you, and He has made you for these days... There’s a passage of Scripture which says:
“Beloved, I write to you, that
you may be mindful of the words which were spoken to you by the apostles of our Lord and Savior, knowing that, in the last days, scoffers will come, and they will walk according to their own flesh, saying, ‘Where is God’? These people will say, ‘The older ones are dying, and things are continuing as they were from the beginning’. But they are willfully forgetting that, by the word of God the heavens stood out of the water, and the earth stood in the water. And the heavens and the earth are preserved now by the same word, and the heavens and the earth are reserved for fire until the day of judgment…

Beloved, do not forget, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise to us, but He is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance… The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, and the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, and the earth and all its works will be burned up…

Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what kind of persons ought we to be in holy conduct and godliness, watching for and hastening the coming of the day of the Lord; since we are watching, according to His promise, for a new heaven and a new earth in which all righteousness dwells.

Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him blameless and in peace, considering that the patience of the Lord is salvation. And since you know these things beforehand, beware that you don’t fall from steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and to Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen”. 2Peter 3:1-18 (abbreviated)

My friends, God wants you to know, that no matter what you might see unfolding around you in this world. No matter what might happen to discourage you or cause you to lose hope. No matter how long it might take for Him to accomplish the things in your life that He has promised to you. God wants you to know that He is good. He wants you to know that He genuinely loves you. He wants you to know that He is in perfect control of everything. And He wants you to know that He is holding you and your circumstance in the very palm of His hand.

I love that this is Peter who is telling us these things, because Peter is a guy who saw and experienced some really bad stuff. Peter was the one whom Jesus was always rebuking for something. Peter was the one who never seemed to get it right. Peter witnessed the death of His only hope in life, when he saw Jesus die upon that cross. But something happened to Peter in the course of processing and living out all the potentially ruinous things that happened in his life. Peter became a guy who finally got it. Peter became a guy who was all about Jesus. Peter didn’t his life well at all, but by God’s grace, and by God’s immovable hand upon his life, Peter finished well. God wants you to finish well, too.

I hope you will determine today, to take your eyes off this world and its troubles, and place your eyes upon Jesus, because He’s got the world’s troubles, and He’s also got you. Those are my thoughts; I’d love to hear yours…
