“When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and He healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: ‘He himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” Matthew 8:16-17
In our ministry, we speak mostly to people who are stuck somewhere in life. Many of the people we speak to are often still involved with exes who are stuck as well. In this era of Christian and non-Christian psychology, people who are stuck in life are usually labeled with some kind of disorder. Someone may have an obsessive compulsive disorder, or they may have a borderline personality disorder, or a bi-polar disorder, or possibly an obstinate defiant disorder, and the list goes on… Often, when we discover the issue(s) we might be suffering from (or the issue someone else might suffer from), we naturally want to fix it.
I don’t want to appear discompassionate, or sound like an ignorant elitist, but it seems to me that for all our knowledge in the nebulous arena of the human heart and mind, we’re still not that far advanced from the folks in Jesus’ time.It seems that we’re much better at diagnosing and labeling these disorders these days, but we’re not much better at actually healing them. We may know much more about the tendencies contained in these various disorders, and we can get prescribed therapies to address them, but, while these prescribed therapies might subdue the symptoms of a disorder, I’m not so sure they really fix it.

Now, I’m not bad-mouthing psychology or psychotherapy, I just believe that we, as Christians, would do better to focus less on the disease, and more upon the Proven Cure. I believe that, focusing on our imperfection, or upon the imperfection of another, rather than focusing on God’s perfection in the circumstance is not very fruitful. When the stuck and troubled folks in the time of the New Testament simply came or were brought to Jesus; He simply healed them.

So here’s my point; After we’ve labeled the disease, learned about the disease, fretted over the disease and tried to fix the disease; the only real cure is to bring ourselves or our broken person to Jesus. If that disease belongs to someone else, we can’t always bring them to Jesus, except in prayer. And if the behavior of this broken person is overly disruptive, we might need to disengage from them as much as possible for our own peace and safety. So again, after all these centuries of learning and classifying the difficult nature of the human mind, the only answer and cure to it’s various phobias and disorders is still the gracious healing touch of Jesus Christ and His Word… “When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and He healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: ‘He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” Matthew 8:16-17

That’s my opinion, I’m not intimidated to hear yours. If you agree or disagree, or if this has helped or made you angry, I’d really like to hear about it…
